Capabilities

From cultural strategy to construction supervision.

Berkley is structured to deliver the cultural, design, and engineering work a serious commission demands — within one practice, under one project lead. Three tiers, twelve disciplines, no handover.

Tier 01

Strategy & Experience

How a place is positioned, what it says, and how it is experienced. The work that happens before — and around — the building.

01

Cultural Strategy & Vision

Vision, positioning, and the business case for cultural assets — museums, heritage districts, public institutions, and the cultural components of mixed-use developments. We help clients articulate what a place is for, who it is for, and how it will work.

Includes

  • Vision, mission & positioning
  • Concept & feasibility studies
  • Business case & operating model
  • Benchmarking & comparative analysis
  • Stakeholder & advisory facilitation

02

Audiences & Visitor Experience

Who comes, why they come, and what they take away. Audience research, journey mapping, and the design of the experience itself — physical and digital — from the first impression to the last.

Includes

  • Audience research & segmentation
  • Visitor journey mapping
  • Experience design & service blueprinting
  • Accessibility & inclusion strategy
  • Digital channel & in-gallery technology strategy

03

Curation & Interpretation

Content, narrative, and the discipline of telling a place — or a collection — well. We work with curators, historians, and subject specialists to develop interpretive plans, exhibition concepts, and the editorial voice of a cultural project.

Includes

  • Interpretive planning
  • Exhibition concept & curatorial development
  • Content & narrative development
  • Object & collection research
  • Multilingual editorial direction

04

Brand, Identity & Wayfinding

The visual and verbal language of a place — naming, identity, signage, wayfinding, and the printed and digital material that carries it. Always designed in the same voice as the place itself.

Includes

  • Naming & verbal identity
  • Visual identity & logotype
  • Wayfinding strategy & signage design
  • Editorial design & print
  • Environmental graphics

Tier 02

Design

From a single building to a master plan. The architectural and spatial work, always coordinated with engineering and conservation from the first sketch.

05

Architecture

Full architectural service from concept through to handover. We lead complex briefs across residential, hospitality, mixed-use, civic, and cultural sectors — at scales from a single building to a district master plan.

Includes

  • Concept & schematic design
  • Design development
  • Planning & statutory submissions
  • Construction documentation
  • Tender & contract administration

06

Heritage & Conservation

A dedicated heritage practice. Measured surveys, conservation management plans, statutory consents, and like-for-like restoration of historic fabric. We work with traditional craftspeople and material specialists where the building demands it.

Includes

  • Conservation management plans
  • Measured & condition surveys
  • Statutory consent (Listed Building, scheduled monument)
  • Material analysis & specification
  • Reversible interventions for adaptive reuse

07

Master Planning & Urban Design

Strategic planning at the scale of the city block, the district, and the campus. Land-use studies, public-realm design, phasing strategies, and the technical work that makes a master plan deliverable rather than aspirational.

Includes

  • Site analysis & feasibility
  • Master plan & design code
  • Public realm & landscape strategy
  • Phasing & delivery planning
  • Stakeholder & authority engagement

08

Interior Architecture

Interior architecture as an extension of the building, not a separate discipline. Joinery, lighting, materials, and FF&E are part of the architectural drawing set from concept onwards.

Includes

  • Spatial planning
  • Joinery & millwork design
  • Material, finish & FF&E specification
  • Lighting design & control strategy
  • Art direction & curation

Tier 03

Engineering & Delivery

Built work, end to end. Structural, MEP, and civil engineering in-house. Sustainability and digital delivery integrated from concept. Construction supervision under the same project lead that drew the scheme.

09

Engineering

Structural, MEP, and civil engineering disciplines integrated with the architectural team from the first sketch. One coordination model, one project lead. The engineering is not a sub-consultant package; it is in the room.

Includes

  • Structural engineering (concrete, steel, timber, masonry)
  • MEP design & coordination
  • Civil engineering & site infrastructure
  • Façade engineering
  • Acoustic & vertical-transportation consultancy

10

Sustainability & Digital Delivery

Sustainability strategy and the digital infrastructure to deliver it: BIM coordination, energy modelling, daylight and thermal analysis, and a coordinated 3D model that survives the building through operation.

Includes

  • BIM (ISO 19650) coordination & management
  • Energy, daylight & thermal modelling
  • LEED, BREEAM, Estidama / Mostadam strategy
  • Whole-life carbon assessment
  • Digital twin & FM handover

11

Construction Supervision & Project Management

We supervise the construction of our own designs. Site presence, contractor coordination, quality control, contract administration, and the unglamorous discipline of carrying a project to completion at the standard it was drawn.

Includes

  • Resident engineer & site supervision
  • Contract administration (FIDIC, JCT)
  • Programme & cost monitoring
  • Quality assurance & inspection
  • Snagging, handover & defects period

12

Programme Advisory

Independent advisory for clients running large, multi-consultant programmes: client-side technical review, design audit, value engineering, and the kind of second opinion that saves a programme from quiet drift.

Includes

  • Client-side technical advisory
  • Design audit & peer review
  • Value engineering
  • Programme & risk review
  • Procurement strategy

Engagement

We can act as cultural strategist, design lead, lead consultant, architect of record, or supervising consultant.

Most of our commissions ask us to integrate two or three tiers above. A cultural quarter is rarely just architecture; a heritage restoration is rarely just stone. We are structured to deliver across them without handing the project from one firm to the next.
